freejazzy Extremely well balanced quartet. With a wonderful airey & firm basement. Drum accents prepare for take offs. The tuba lines invite to safely and easily ground again. Vivid stories are being told. And these gentlemen know how to tell stories just right.

about

Achim Kirchmair and his colleagues Ali Angerer (tuba), Andjelko Stupar (drums) and his guest on this album, the Slovenian trumpeter David Jarh, succeed in setting their own musical accents in a decidedly elegant way on "Sunkeeper". What immediately catches the ear is this wonderfully light-footed, playful, soulfully warm and at the same time very dignified tone that carries the sound of the music through the numbers. It almost seems as if the four gentlemen float through their pieces more than they really play their way through them with their feet on the ground.

The Tyrolean and his band know very well how to translate their complex way of playing into something flowing and accessible. The compositions and improvisations flow seamlessly into each other, the lively back and forth between the musicians makes for wonderful variety, the quiet passages, which at moments even seem spherical, develop just as much of an attraction as the powerful and experimental ones do.

It is the unconventional mixture paired with an extraordinary musical passion that makes the difference here. The way the four instrumentalists weave the individual elements together, weave their melodies and rhythmic structures into tense and constantly condensing arcs, and the way they deftly turn the intensity screw, testifies to a broad understanding of how to create a mood with music that immediately captures you.

"Sunkeeper" has become an album that appeals to the mind as much as to the soul, that calls for intensive listening as much as it entertains in an exciting way.

The intention of his musical work is to create an individual form of expression - far away from any stylistic definition. His music, which is a fusion of different, opens up an infinite fund of sounds and rhythms from which he shapes his guitar playing. ... more
